weekly photo challenge: abstract

This week’s photo challenge is about taking a photo of something familiar and turn it into something else.

With a little photo editing this is how it looked like. Although it still looks like something familiar but it may or may not look like what it really is depending upon our own interpretation.

Abstract as a form of art refers to those that doesn’t have no trace of anything recognizable thus making the viewer interpret it in their own ways as to what it really means. It takes an imaginative mind to be able to translate something unreadable into something beautiful.

Love is good example of an abstract concept. It doesn’t have any physical existence but it exists in our thoughts. However, love exists if we believe it exists. Like a form of an abstract art, love could have a lot of interpretations and be differently understood.

sunday stills: pets

Since i’ve been posting a lot of photos of my kitties in my blog, today for Sunday Stills and as a first time contributor to this challenge, this space will be for my doggie Kristina. She’s fun, very playful, loving and a beautiful bundle of furry cuteness. She cuddles up with me every night in bed.

sunday post: surroundings

These are photos of surroundings that hubby took during their vessel’s stay in Port Mellon and Squamish Port in British Columbia Canada. All the descriptions in each photo are also written by him. He is my guest blogger for today.

mohawk creek

mohawk creek

Mowhawk creek is located in Port Mellon near the Howe Sound Pulp Mill. Actually, the creek is naturally small but the mill expanded it and water that flows here is what the mill uses and that’s the reason why the valve is visible in the photo. Eventually, it became a habitat for salmon and is now a protected area. The abundance of rainfall is high thus providing the creek with lots of fresh and pure water.

chief stawamus mountain

Remember the “Cliffhanger” movie by Sylvester Stallone? Yes, it was shot entirely on this cliff/mountain which they call ” Chief Stawamus Mountain” or simply called Stawamus Chief ..a famous Indian chief.  It is listed as the second largest granite monolith in the world and is very famous for mountain climbers during summer.

wild ducks

From the main gate of Squamish, it is still a long way walk to the town and along the road is a marsh land full of different water birds like this wild Canadian duck and other water fowls.

driftwood 1

driftwood 2

I’ve been visiting this place since the early 90’s since this place is a regular port of call of our company’s vessels. The 2 big drift woods in the photos were already here at that time til now. Further on the bent is the marina or yacht club. Squamish is just a small cozy town before but when the Winter Olympics was held here last 2010 it became a famous tourist attraction complete with malls, new shops, etc.

travel theme: soft

My breakfast for today and one of my favorite comfort foods is soy yoghurt or soybean curd pudding but most popularly known as “taho” which is a popular street food in the Philippines. It is served hot, usually in the morning, peddled by the “magtataho” or taho vendor.

Taho is made of fresh melt-in-your-mouth soft silken tofu with brown sugar syrup and “sago pearls” which are very similar to tapioca pearls. Every mouthful is such a delight giving me so much pleasure and sweetness to start the day with.

a small cup of taho is P5.00 (about $0.12) or P10.00 (about $0.25) like the one in the photo

Nowadays, this favorite Filipino delicacy is already available at the mall with lots of flavor ranging from strawberry, chocolate, mocha, etc. But nothing beats the original flavor of taho that i grew up with.

I’m happy, i’m full, and i am ready for the day. How about you, what’s your favorite breakfast meal or comfort food?

All happiness depends on a leisurely breakfast. – John Gunther

Tiramisu – tiramisu flavored cream filled donut slightly dusted with cocoa powder

The donuts here are so soft and delectable. You can’t resist another bite, and then another, and then you will find yourself trying another flavor. They have a lot of choices and the flavors are not too sweet which makes them all pleasurable to eat.

A donut is P42.00 (about $1.00 each), a dozen is P350.00 (about $8.50 or $0.70 each), and 2 dozens for P550.00 (about $13.40 or $0.56 each). This means that it is really cheaper to buy by the dozens.

Now i’m sure you are craving for a donut now. Don’t blame me, you’ve been warned.

travel theme: bright

The Philippines has the longest Christmas celebration in the world. Right after Halloween, it’s now time to decorate and brighten up the house with Christmas lights of different shapes and colors.

If a nice song can uplift our spirit and make us happier, so are the the brilliant decorations of lights. Colors influence how we feel that’s why red is one of the most popular colors during the holiday season because it stimulates the energy and creates excitement.

travel theme: spooky

Yesterday, i headed out to the mall to do a little shopping. There was a long queue of children in halloween costume and adults alike at the customer service area to claim their goodie baskets for the mall trick or treat event.

Before going home, i thought of visiting the activity center to see and take photos of the christmas trees and decorations. There was a big stage set up which was used for the Trick or Treat mall program and i noticed how simply it was decorated. The stage has only a black background with the mall’s logo and some drawings of bats flying around. Anyway, i just thought of taking a photo of the stage because i think the bat drawings look funny rather than scary.

When i got home, i saved all the photos on my laptop and i was so surprised that when i opened the photo i took of the stage, it looks like this.

I didn’t know that I managed to capture the full moon and the silhouette of the tree branches at the background. Full moon, dark, silhouette of tree branches, all the characteristics of being spooky.

halloween masks

I also stopped by to take photos of these awesome halloween masks. My favorite is the witch. Which one is yours?

Happy Halloween to all! Booooo….
